Scammers Impersonating Bank Employees: Whom Can You Trust?

A caller claiming that “money is being taken from your account,” “a loan is being issued in your name” or “your card needs urgent protection” can cause panic. Scammers exploit this reaction by impersonating bank security or customer service staff. Their aim is to make you follow instructions without checking.

Knowing your name, bank or some personal details does not prove that the caller is a genuine employee. An official tone, an identification card photograph or a bank logo is also insufficient. Trust should be based on contact you independently establish through an official bank channel.

A bank employee will not ask you over the telephone to disclose an SMS verification code, PIN or banking application password. A demand to move money to someone else’s “safe account” is a serious warning sign. Do not take out a loan, install unfamiliar applications or share your screen at the caller’s instruction.

End a suspicious conversation. Find the contact number on your bank card, in the official application or on an official website you already know, and call the bank yourself. Visit a branch if necessary. Do not use a number or link supplied by the caller for verification. Genuine banks may contact customers, but unusual requests should be checked independently.

Students and staff should also be cautious about calls concerning scholarships, salaries or refunds of overpayments. Check incoming payments and refunds in the official banking application. Pressure to act quickly, demands for secrecy and attempts to prevent you from ending the conversation are warning signs.

If you have disclosed confidential information or transferred money, notify your bank immediately and request measures to protect your card and account access and review suspicious transactions. Preserve the call time, telephone number, messages and payment records, and contact the police. Recovery of funds is not guaranteed, but prompt action may help limit further losses.
