New Fraud Tactics: What Should You Know to Avoid Being Deceived?

Scammers exploit trust, fear and rushed decisions. They may impersonate bank employees, government representatives, sellers or someone you know. An official logo, a photograph of an identification card or a familiar name does not establish the sender’s identity.

One common scheme creates alarm with claims such as “someone is taking out a loan in your name” or “your money is at risk.” The caller then asks you to transfer funds to a “safe account,” disclose a verification code or install an application. End the conversation and contact your bank independently through an official channel. Do not rely on the number provided in the suspicious message.

Other schemes promise prizes, substantial discounts or attractive jobs. A linked page may resemble a genuine website, while an attached file may be presented as a document or invitation. Do not install applications from unknown sources, especially APK files. Never disclose passwords, PINs or one-time verification codes to another person.

Artificial intelligence can also imitate a familiar person’s voice. If you hear an urgent request for money, call that person yourself using a number you already know. Messages from familiar accounts also need verification: someone else may have gained access to the account.

Pause and verify an offer before making a decision. Pressure to act immediately, demands for secrecy and attempts to prevent questions are warning signs. Students and staff should independently confirm unusual payment requests that appear to come from a manager or colleague.

If you have already sent money or disclosed confidential information, contact your bank immediately and request measures to protect your card or account access. Change passwords using a trusted device, preserve messages and payment records, and report the incident to the police. Be cautious of anyone demanding advance payment to “recover your lost money.” Help victims obtain timely support rather than blaming them.
