Conflict and fighting: a dangerous path towards crime

An ordinary misunderstanding, a careless remark or an argument on social media can sometimes develop into a serious conflict. Using force in anger may harm someone’s health and lead to legal liability. The consequences of a few minutes of anger can affect education, employment and family life for a long time.

Not every disagreement is a crime. However, hitting someone, causing bodily injury or damaging another person’s property during an argument may result in liability under the law. Whether conduct constitutes an administrative offence or a crime depends on its nature, culpability, consequences and other circumstances.

The severity of any injuries is an important factor in determining liability. Penalties for relevant offences may include fines, compulsory community service, correctional labour, restriction of liberty or imprisonment. Even a single blow or push can have unexpectedly serious consequences. Saying “I did not mean for that to happen” does not, by itself, settle the question of liability.

The argument “They started it” does not justify every action that follows. The law recognises the right to protect oneself and others against unlawful attacks within the limits of necessary defence. However, chasing and assaulting someone after an attack has ended, or taking revenge later, is assessed separately. Each participant’s actions and role must be established through evidence.

If a conflict is escalating, pause the conversation, lower your voice and maintain a safe distance. Do not respond to insulting messages with threats or agree to meet for a confrontation. Gathering friends to intimidate the other person makes the situation more dangerous. Where necessary, seek help from a responsible staff member, tutor or another trusted person.

If you witness a fight, do not encourage it or provoke those involved. Notify security staff or the police without putting yourself at risk. Call for medical assistance for anyone injured. Recording the incident should not delay help, and existing footage should not be shared to humiliate a victim.

If you experience violence, move to safety, obtain medical assistance and contact the appropriate authorities. Preserve relevant messages, medical documents and other information. Resolving disagreements through dialogue and lawful procedures helps protect health, dignity and future opportunities.
