Ignorance of the law does not remove liability: legal awareness matters

Many everyday decisions have legal consequences. Signing a contract, publishing information, using someone else’s property or carrying out workplace instructions requires attention to the law. Saying “I did not know it was prohibited” does not, by itself, remove liability for an offence.

The principle that ignorance of the law does not excuse wrongdoing encourages responsibility for one’s actions. However, it does not mean that every mistake automatically deserves punishment. The legal grounds for liability, culpability and other necessary conditions must be established in each case.

Under Uzbekistan’s Criminal Code, only the code determines whether conduct constitutes a crime and is punishable. A person is responsible only for conduct for which their culpability has been established through lawful procedures. Criminal liability requires all elements of the relevant offence. Legal awareness therefore includes understanding protective safeguards as well as obligations.

Statements such as “Everyone does it,” “An acquaintance allowed it” or “The internet says it is permitted” are not reliable legal grounds. Before altering a document, using another person’s account or circulating an unverified accusation, establish whether the action is lawful. A friend’s request or supervisor’s instruction does not automatically guarantee legality.

Obtain legal information from official, reliable sources. Check the current wording, effective date and relevance to your circumstances. A short social media comment or outdated advice may omit important conditions and exceptions. Seek clarification from a lawyer or the appropriate authority when necessary.

Do not sign contracts or applications without reading them, or sign blank documents. Keep payment records, agreements and important correspondence. Clarify the purpose and legal basis of suspicious instructions or offers. Checking before deciding may be easier than resolving legal problems afterwards.

If your rights are violated, use lawful reporting and appeal procedures. Legal assistance is an important means of protecting your interests. Legal awareness means respecting others’ rights, understanding your obligations and making informed decisions, as well as avoiding unlawful conduct.
